Breakthrough Byte With Jeff Shuey
The Intersection Between Technology and People
Do You Know Where Your Genetic IP is Today?
How does it feel to go from being worth $4.5 billion one day to $0 the next?
If you have been watching the news lately, you may have seen the company and the founder of Theranos being mentioned. I don’t claim to have all the information. I don’t fully know the background of what happened and why. However, what I do know is that the press has been relentless at valuing the company as a tech darling … then mercilessly downgrading the company (and by a very direct insinuation the founder of the company)
I’m not as interested in the valuation of the company as I am in the value of the data these companies may be deriving from your genetic IP. By companies I’m thinking of just a few – there are many others. The few I’m thinking about are Theranos, 23andMe, Ancestry where you provide some of your DNA (blood for Theranos and spit for the other two).
By IP I mean intellectual property, but it’s HP … Human Property (aka your genome). The genetic properties of every human are unique. And, as far as I know, you own your own genetic property. Right?
The question is:
- Is that Genetic IP, err HP being handled properly?
- How do you know?
- What rights do you give up when you use services like Theranos, 23andMe, Ancestry?
Some of the sub-questions are:
- Are we allowing these tech darlings too much access to the gene pool?
- Are we allowing them to run roughshod over Genetic IP?
The Uber-ification of personal science
In a sense, these companies are doing the same thing to medical testing as Uber did to livery services.
There are sub-questions that need to be considered. And, they will be discussed on the show. Issues include the Bioethics of using your IP, Property rights, Use rights, and if you “consent” payment rights.
Some of those takeaways could include recommendations for insurance coverage, what you should eat, and it could even go so far as to help you “select” the right procreation partner.
What’s the Value of Your Genetic IP?
As always Jeff will talk about the Costs, Benefits, and ROI’s related to your Genetic IP
- Most people do want to know their risk of genetically transmitted diseases
- There are financial implications when genetic testing becomes more prevalent
- Is it right to be able to have the ability to identify the best match for an “ideal” child
