The Intersection Between Technology and People
The Robot You WANT to Take Your Job
Imagine a robot brushing your teeth. For those that grew up watching the Jetsons, this may not seem too far-fetched.
But for those that think robots are going to take our jobs, this might be a bit more ominous. The fact is … Robots ARE going to take our jobs. The good news is … these are jobs you don’t want to do. The way to think about this is to think about robots that are going to take jobs that you don’t really care about. Sure, you care that they get done, but you personally don’t want to do them. Things like brushing your teeth or cleaning a bathroom or preparing food.
Some people will miss a few of these aspects in their personal lives. For example, cooking. Some people really do enjoy cooking. And for those people that do you’ll still be able to cook. But for those that don’t want to cook, there will be options. There are already robot chefs that can do a lot with almost any type of cooking and almost any raw materials.
Cooking is just one example of robots taking jobs that we may not actually want to do. There are lots of others that if you just think about it for a few minutes, you can come up with them on your own. Think about a task you have to do all the time that you would like to delegate. Taking out the trash, mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, etc. I’ll pause here for 30 seconds so you can identify a few tasks you’d like to avoid, offload and ignore.
The fact is robots will take our jobs. But, like a lot of automation that has come before the robots of today, these are going to be jobs that we’re not going to miss doing. Brace Yourselves!
- Personal Robots are a thing. Get ready for an onslaught.
- The robot that saves you time is the one you want to hug.
- What’s the first task you will delegate to a robot?
- How will you compensate a robot that is doing your work?
- How many personal robots do you think you’ll have by the year 2020?
