Last March, I gave a presentation at the Houston Interactive Marketing Association (HIMA), titled “Facial Coding, The Missing Piece to your Content Marketing Strategy”. In the context of marketing, facial coding and emotion analytics have proven very powerful by measuring the emotional reactions to advertisements and marketing content in real-time. In short, emotion analytics measures the feelings of people by analyzing the expressions on their face.
In fact, 1 in 3 fortune 100 companies has already been using emotion analytics to regularly test the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. The vast applications of the artificial intelligence (AI), however, are just starting to be fully realized. AI, for instance, has been used to measure the reactions of large crowds at sporting events, political figures during speeches, and patients in healthcare settings.
What about the workplace? With 70% of the US workforce disengaged, it seems this environment would be ripe to apply the technology. Well, that depends.
This May, a new movie titled “The Circle” starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson opens where Emma’s character, Mae, lands a dream job at one of the most powerful technology companies in the world. Bailey, Tom Hank’s character, leads the organization with a mission to perfect humanity. But it comes at a cost. The company tracks every move of their employees and measures their behaviors via cameras. The companies AI links to all the cameras of the world to with a mission to “change the world”.
