The Need for Tough Choices
“If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.”
Are you feeling confused or overwhelmed in your business?
Have you been able to choose a central focus?
And based on that, how you fulfill it?
In Gary Keller’s book, The ONE Thing, they start with “The Focusing Question.”
“What’s the ONE thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
Choosing to choose is difficult, but there are some important reasons why you must.
For example in Keller’s book, organizations want Productivity and Profit, the two P’s. However, most have not tapped into the other two P’s that are just as critical: Purpose and Priority.
Having a purpose forces a choice! When you have that purpose, you are able to focus.
What that means is deciding what things you’re NOT going to do. My husband and business partner Richard calls this is NOT TO DO list. And if you saw his TO DO list you’d know how important it is for him to have a NOT TO DO list.
The irony is, people are often operating from a lack mentality and fear. The fear is… “I won’t get enough business or have enough to offer, so I have to do it all.” The sad thing is, with those fears guiding your purpose and choices, your path becomes difficult and running your business effectively becomes impossible. The Do It All mentality does not work. From a customer or client standpoint, they don’t respond to it either. You have nothing that makes you different. You are doing it all!
Tough Choices Takeaways
- If you are overwhelmed, try asking the focusing question. Then ask, Is everything that you are doing falling under your Purpose?
- Have you forced yourself to make a DO NOT DO list? If not, why not?
- Work on writing down 10 things that you are currently doing that is not fulfilling your purpose on a do-not-do list. (Notice there is no TRY, but you can WORK on this! It can be tough so even it is 3 things that are a start.)
- The number one sign that you are not making choices that align with your purpose is another sneaky P word… procrastination.
